Who we are

“Look at this seaweed I found!”

Yes, we are the kind of people who get excited about seaweed on the beach, or a particularly interesting creature washed up on the shore. We bring that enthusiasm to our work, whether it’s discovering patterns in a dataset, getting a piece of code to run without bugs or piecing together the puzzle of a model from scratch.

We have both been working on edge cases our entire careers. We met during our PhDs at the University of Aberdeen and you know what they say—those who PhD together, stay together. While Rebekka’s PhD focused on ecological modelling of movement and dispersal in the marine environment and Maria’s investigated the relatedness of populations of a non-native tunicate across global scales, we both had to deal with our fair share of data complexity and coding challenges.

Be it ecological modelling or 'omics processing, the ability to identify key points of error, anticipate unknowns, and customise analytical pipelines and tools to meet the data in a statistically robust way have been forged through gruelling efforts.

It was with this realisation that we decided to combine forces and offer these skills up to anyone who needs them. After all, why should you suffer the process when we’ve already been there?

Meet the Team

Together, Maria and Rebekka cover a wide range of skill sets, including bioinformatics, species distribution and movement modelling, data analysis and statistics.

  • Co-Founder

Rebekka is a computational movement and population ecologist. During her PhD at the University of Aberdeen, she developed the modelling software MerMADE to study movement and dispersal in aquatic environments. This model has been applied to manage sandeels in the North Sea and to enhance King Scallop populations in collaboration with AFBI. She has worked on various systems, including an ecophysiological model for Loggerhead sea turtles, a multi-species pollination network model for Andean ecosystems and is currently working on species distribution models and the range expansion of damselflies in Sweden. In her spare time, Rebekka is also interested in science communication and outreach, particularly using storytelling to convey scientific concepts.

  • Co-founder

As a bioinformatician and evolutionary biologist, Maria brings a powerful combination of scientific expertise and lived experience to our mission. Originally from Cyprus and a first-generation university graduate, she is deeply committed to making science more open, inclusive, and accessible—especially for communities that have historically been excluded from STEM fields.

Holding a PhD in Marine Biology from the University of Aberdeen, Maria has spent years working at the cross roads between ecology and bioinformatics, with both modern and historical DNA. Her work has centered on navigating the complex intersection of access benefit sharing, capacity building, and ethical data use—particularly in under-resourced settings.

She brings a strong understanding of how to manage research under tight constraints, always striving to make the most of available data and resources.

Maria is passionate about the ways in which the natural world contributes to cultural heritage and how ecology and conservation can be leveraged to support development and empowerment in marginalized communities.
